There is / There are
"There is" と "There are" は、何かが「ある」「いる」と言うときに使います。日本語では「〜がある」「〜がいる」と言いますが、英語では1つのものには "There is"、2つ以上のものには "There are" と使い分けます。このレッスンでは、肯定文・否定文・疑問文、数えられない名詞、過去形のパターンをすべて学びましょう。
There is — 1つのものがあるとき
1つのものがあると言うときに "There is" を使います。短縮形 "There's" も使えます。名詞の前に "a" または "an" をつけます。母音で始まる単語（apple, egg, umbrella）の前には "an"、子音で始まる単語（cat, dog, table）の前には "a" を使います。
There is + a/an + 名詞（単数） + 場所
There is a cat on the table.
テーブルの上にねこが1匹います。
There is a book in my bag.
私のかばんの中に本が1冊あります。
There is a park near my house.
私の家の近くに公園が1つあります。
There is an apple on the plate.
お皿の上にりんごが1つあります。
There is a bird in the tree.

あなたあての手紙が1通あります。
数えられない名詞（water, milk, rice, money）にも "There is" を使います。例：There is water in the glass. 数えられない名詞の前には "a/an" をつけず、"some" を使うことができます。
There are — 2つ以上のものがあるとき
2つ以上のものがあると言うときに "There are" を使います。名詞は複数形（s/esをつける）にします。"some"（いくつかの）、"many"（たくさんの）、"a lot of"（たくさんの）、数字（two, three）などをつけて使えます。
There are + 数字/some/many + 名詞（複数） + 場所
There are three dogs in the garden.
庭に犬が3匹います。
There are many children in the park.
公園にたくさんの子どもたちがいます。
There are two birds in the tree.
木に鳥が2羽います。
There are some flowers in the vase.
花びんの中に花がいくつかあります。
There are ten students in the classroom.

否定文 — There isn't / There aren't
「ない」「いない」と言いたいときは "isn't"（is not）や "aren't"（are not）を加えます。単数には "There isn't"、複数には "There aren't" を使います。否定文では "some" の代わりに "any" を使います。
There is not (isn't) + a/any + 名詞 / There are not (aren't) + any + 名詞（複数）
There isn't a hospital here.
ここには病院がありません。

肯定文では "some" を使い、否定文では "any" を使います。例：There are some apples. → There aren't any apples. これを "some → any" のルールとして覚えましょう。
疑問文 — Is there? / Are there?
「ありますか？」「いますか？」とたずねたいときは "Is there" や "Are there" で文を始めます。1つなら "Is there"、複数なら "Are there" を使います。疑問文でも "some" の代わりに "any" を使います。

答え方は "Yes, there is." / "No, there isn't." または "Yes, there are." / "No, there aren't." です。短く答えるときに "Yes, there's." とは言いません。"Yes, there is." と省略せずに答えましょう。
数えられない名詞と There is
数えられない名詞（uncountable nouns）の water, milk, money, rice, bread, sugar, homework, information, music などには "There is" だけを使います。"There are" は使いません。これらの名詞の前には "a/an" をつけず、"some"、"much"、"a little" を使います。

There is some water in the glass.
コップの中に水が少しあります。

「数えられる」と「数えられない」の見分け方 — 数字で数えられるなら countable（a book, two books）、数えられないなら uncountable（water, rice）です。数えられない名詞には -s/-es をつけません（waters, rices とは書きません）。
過去形 — There was / There were
「以前〜があった」と言うときは "There was"（単数）と "There were"（複数）を使います。否定なら "There wasn't" / "There weren't"、疑問文なら "Was there?" / "Were there?" になります。

There was a big tree in the garden.

現在形（is/are）と過去形（was/were）を混同しないようにしましょう。"yesterday"、"last week"、"before" などの時を表す言葉があれば was/were を使います。
日本語と英語のちがい
- ●日本語では「ある」「いる」の1種類ですが、英語では is/are を使い分けます。単数なら is、複数なら are です。
- ●日本語：「テーブルの上にねこがいる」→ 英語："There is a cat on the table." 日本語では場所を文の最初に置きますが、英語では "There" で始めて場所を最後に置きます。語順がまったく逆になります。
- ●日本語には "a/an"（冠詞）がありませんが、英語では "There is a..." のように冠詞を必ずつけます。忘れやすいので注意しましょう。
- ●日本語には「数えられる」「数えられない」の区別がありませんが、英語ではこの区別が is/are の選択に影響します。例えば water（水）は数えられないので常に is を使います。
- ●日本語：「あった」→ 英語："There was/were"。時制を変えるときは動詞だけ変えます（is→was, are→were）。
- ●日本語では「ない」の一語で否定できますが、英語では isn't/aren't を使い分け、さらに "any" を加える必要があります。
