Past Progressive
గత ప్రగతి కాలం గతంలో ఒక నిర్దిష్ట సమయంలో జరుగుతున్న పనిని చెప్పడానికి వాడతారు. 'నిన్న 8 గంటలకు నేను చదువుతున్నాను', 'ఆమె ఫోన్ వచ్చినప్పుడు వంట చేస్తుంది'. was/were + V-ing నమూనాలో ఉంటుంది.
was/were + V-ing నమూనా
I/He/She/It + was, You/We/They + were. క్రియకు -ing చేరుస్తారు. గతంలో కొనసాగుతున్న పనిని చెప్పడానికి వాడతారు.
S + was/were + V-ing
I was studying at 8 p.m. last night.
నిన్న రాత్రి 8 గంటలకు నేను చదువుతున్నాను.
She was cooking when I called.
నేను ఫోన్ చేసినప్పుడు ఆమె వంట చేస్తోంది.
They were playing soccer at that time.
ఆ సమయంలో వాళ్ళు సాకర్ ఆడుతున్నారు.
It was raining all morning.
ఉదయమంతా వర్షం కురుస్తోంది.
when + సాధారణ గత కాలం, while + గత ప్రగతి కాలం. 'I was sleeping when the phone rang.' 'While I was sleeping, the phone rang.'
when / while తో వాడకం
రెండు పనులు గతంలో ఒకేసారి జరుగుతున్నప్పుడు: while + గత ప్రగతి, when + సాధారణ గత. ఒక పొడవైన పని జరుగుతుండగా మరో పని జరిగింది.
While I was walking, I found a coin.
నేను నడుస్తుండగా ఒక నాణెం దొరికింది.
She was reading when he arrived.
అతను వచ్చినప్పుడు ఆమె చదువుతోంది.
While we were eating, the dog barked.
మేము తింటుండగా కుక్క మొరిగింది.
'While I was walking' (పొడవైన పని) + 'I found a coin' (అకస్మాత్ పని). ప్రగతి = నేపథ్యం, సాధారణ గత = సంఘటన.
తెలుగు మరియు ఆంగ్లం తేడాలు
- ●తెలుగులో '-తున్నాను' వర్తమాన మరియు గత ప్రగతి రెండింటికీ వాడతారు. ఆంగ్లంలో am/is/are + V-ing (వర్తమానం) vs was/were + V-ing (గతం) వేరు.
- ●తెలుగులో '-తుండగా' = ఆంగ్ల 'while...was V-ing'. రెండూ ఒకే భావన.
- ●తెలుగులో 'ఫోన్ వచ్చినప్పుడు' = 'when the phone rang'. '-నప్పుడు' = when.
- ●ఆంగ్లంలో was/were ఎంపిక కర్త ప్రకారం. తెలుగులో ఇలాంటి ఎంపిక లేదు.

I was study when he came.
I was studying when he came.
was/were తర్వాత V-ing రావాలి. study కాదు, studying.
While I walked, it started raining.
While I was walking, it started raining.
while తర్వాత గత ప్రగతి (was walking) రావాలి.
