Gerunds & Infinitives
Gerund (क्रिया + -ing) और Infinitive (to + क्रिया) दोनों क्रिया को संज्ञा की तरह प्रयोग करने के तरीक़े हैं। 'I enjoy reading' (Gerund) और 'I want to read' (Infinitive)। कौन सी क्रिया के बाद gerund आएगा और कौन सी के बाद infinitive — यह अंग्रेज़ी सीखने की एक बड़ी चुनौती है।
Gerund (-ing) — संज्ञा के रूप में क्रिया
Gerund = क्रिया + -ing, जो संज्ञा की तरह काम करती है। कुछ क्रियाओं के बाद gerund आता है।
I enjoy reading books.
मुझे किताबें पढ़ना अच्छा लगता है।
Swimming is good exercise.
तैराकी अच्छा व्यायाम है।
She avoids eating junk food.
वह जंक फ़ूड खाने से बचती है।

Gerund लेने वाली मुख्य क्रियाएँ: enjoy, finish, avoid, mind, keep, suggest, practice
Infinitive (to + क्रिया)
Infinitive = to + मूल क्रिया। कुछ क्रियाओं के बाद infinitive आता है।
I want to learn English.
मैं अंग्रेज़ी सीखना चाहता हूँ।
She decided to study abroad.
उसने विदेश में पढ़ने का फ़ैसला किया।
He needs to go now.
उसे अब जाना होगा।
I hope to visit Rajasthan.
मुझे राजस्थान जाने की उम्मीद है।
Infinitive लेने वाली मुख्य क्रियाएँ: want, need, decide, hope, plan, agree, promise, learn
Gerund और Infinitive दोनों — अर्थ समान
कुछ क्रियाओं के बाद gerund या infinitive दोनों आ सकते हैं, अर्थ नहीं बदलता।
I like reading. / I like to read.
मुझे पढ़ना पसंद है। (दोनों सही)
She started singing. / She started to sing.
उसने गाना शुरू किया। (दोनों सही)
It began raining. / It began to rain.
बारिश होने लगी। (दोनों सही)
Gerund और Infinitive दोनों — अर्थ भिन्न
कुछ क्रियाओं के बाद gerund या infinitive में अर्थ बदल जाता है।
I stopped smoking. (बंद कर दिया)
मैंने धूम्रपान बंद कर दिया।
I stopped to smoke. (रुककर किया)
मैं रुका और धूम्रपान किया।
I remember meeting him. (याद है कि मिला)
मुझे उससे मिलना याद है।
I remember to meet him. (मिलना याद रखूँगा)
मुझे उससे मिलना याद है। (भविष्य)
हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में अंतर
- ●हिंदी में '-ना' (पढ़ना, खाना, जाना) एक ही रूप Gerund और Infinitive दोनों के लिए काम करता है।
- ●अंग्रेज़ी में reading (gerund) और to read (infinitive) अलग-अलग हैं, और कौन सी क्रिया कौन सा रूप लेगी — यह याद रखना ज़रूरी है।
Common Mistakes
I enjoy to swim.
I enjoy swimming.
enjoy के बाद gerund आता है, infinitive नहीं।
She wants learning English.
She wants to learn English.
want के बाद infinitive (to learn) आता है, gerund नहीं।
