Must / Have to — ज़रूरी है
Must / Have to
'Must' और 'Have to' दोनों अनिवार्यता (obligation) दर्शाते हैं — 'तुम्हें यह करना ज़रूरी है'। लेकिन इनमें सूक्ष्म अंतर है: 'must' आंतरिक कर्तव्य है, 'have to' बाहरी नियम है। 'I must study hard' (मुझे मेहनत करनी चाहिए — मेरा फ़ैसला) vs 'I have to wear a uniform' (मुझे यूनिफ़ॉर्म पहनना पड़ता है — स्कूल का नियम)।
Must — आंतरिक अनिवार्यता
'must' + मूल क्रिया। व्यक्तिगत कर्तव्य, मज़बूत सलाह या नियम।
I must finish this work today.
मुझे आज यह काम पूरा करना ज़रूरी है।
You must respect your elders.
तुम्हें बड़ों का सम्मान करना चाहिए।
Students must not use phones in class.
विद्यार्थियों को कक्षा में फ़ोन नहीं इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए।
You must see this movie!
तुम्हें यह फ़िल्म ज़रूर देखनी चाहिए!
Have to — बाहरी अनिवार्यता
'have to / has to' + मूल क्रिया। बाहरी नियम, कानून या परिस्थिति।
I have to wake up at 5 AM.
मुझे सुबह 5 बजे उठना पड़ता है।
She has to wear a uniform.
उसे यूनिफ़ॉर्म पहनना पड़ता है।
We have to follow the traffic rules.
हमें यातायात नियमों का पालन करना पड़ता है।
Do you have to go now?
क्या तुम्हें अभी जाना पड़ रहा है?
must not (निषेध) vs don't have to (ज़रूरी नहीं)
'must not' = मना है (prohibition)। 'don't have to' = ज़रूरी नहीं है (no obligation)।
You must not cheat in the exam.
परीक्षा में नकल करना मना है।
You don't have to come tomorrow.
तुम्हें कल आने की ज़रूरत नहीं है।
Children must not play near the road.
बच्चों को सड़क के पास नहीं खेलना चाहिए।
You don't have to pay. It's free.
तुम्हें पैसे देने की ज़रूरत नहीं। मुफ़्त है।
must not = मना है! don't have to = तुम्हारी मर्ज़ी (करो या मत करो)
Had to — भूतकाल
'must' का भूतकाल नहीं होता — 'had to' प्रयोग होता है।
I had to walk to school yesterday.
मुझे कल पैदल स्कूल जाना पड़ा।
She had to cancel the trip.
उसे यात्रा रद्द करनी पड़ी।
हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में अंतर
- ●हिंदी में 'ज़रूरी है / करना पड़ता है / करना चाहिए' अंग्रेज़ी के must/have to से मेल खाता है।
- ●'मना है' = must not।
- ●'ज़रूरी नहीं' = don't have to।
- ●हिंदी में यह अंतर संदर्भ से स्पष्ट होता है, अंग्रेज़ी में शब्दों से।
Common Mistakes

You must not go. / You don't have to go.
'don't must' ग़लत है। निषेध → must not, अनावश्यक → don't have to।
She musts study hard.
She must study hard.
must सभी कर्ताओं के साथ एक ही रूप — 'musts' नहीं।
