Past Progressive
Past Progressive (भूत निरंतर काल) का प्रयोग उन क्रियाओं को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है जो भूतकाल में किसी समय जारी थीं। 'I was reading a book at 8 PM' — यहाँ 'was reading' Past Progressive है। हिंदी में '-रहा था / -रही थी / -रहे थे' का प्रयोग होता है। यह काल अक्सर दो भूतकालीन क्रियाओं को जोड़ने में भी प्रयोग होता है।
Past Progressive की संरचना
was/were + क्रिया-ing। I/he/she/it के साथ 'was', you/we/they के साथ 'were' का प्रयोग होता है।
I was studying at 9 PM.
मैं रात 9 बजे पढ़ रहा था।
She was cooking when I called.
जब मैंने फ़ोन किया, वह खाना बना रही थी।
They were playing cricket.
वे क्रिकेट खेल रहे थे।
He was walking to school.
वह पैदल स्कूल जा रहा था।

when और while के साथ प्रयोग
जब दो क्रियाएँ भूतकाल में एक साथ होती हैं, तो Past Progressive और Simple Past को 'when' या 'while' से जोड़ते हैं।
I was eating when the phone rang.
मैं खाना खा रहा था जब फ़ोन बजा।
While she was sleeping, it started raining.
जब वह सो रही थी, बारिश शुरू हो गई।
While I was walking, I saw a snake.
जब मैं चल रहा था, मैंने साँप देखा।
They were dancing when the music stopped.
वे नाच रहे थे जब संगीत रुक गया।
while + Past Progressive (जारी क्रिया), when + Simple Past (बीच में हुई क्रिया)
दो समानांतर क्रियाएँ
जब दो क्रियाएँ भूतकाल में एक ही समय जारी थीं, दोनों Past Progressive में होती हैं।
I was reading while she was cooking.
मैं पढ़ रहा था जबकि वह खाना बना रही थी।
They were singing and dancing.
वे गा रहे थे और नाच रहे थे।
नकारात्मक और प्रश्नवाचक
नकारात्मक: was/were + not + क्रिया-ing। प्रश्न: Was/Were + कर्ता + क्रिया-ing?
I wasn't sleeping at that time.
मैं उस समय नहीं सो रहा था।
Were you watching the match?
क्या तुम मैच देख रहे थे?
She wasn't listening to the teacher.
वह शिक्षक की बात नहीं सुन रही थी।

वे क्या कर रहे थे?
हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में अंतर
- ●हिंदी का '-रहा था / -रही थी / -रहे थे' (खा रहा था, पढ़ रही थी) अंग्रेज़ी के Past Progressive (was/were + -ing) से सीधे मेल खाता है।
- ●दोनों भाषाओं में यह भूतकाल की जारी क्रिया को दर्शाता है।
Common Mistakes
I was read a book.
I was reading a book.
Past Progressive में was/were के बाद क्रिया-ing आती है (read → reading)।
While I was cooking, she was come home.
While I was cooking, she came home.
बीच में हुई छोटी क्रिया Simple Past में होती है (came), Past Progressive में नहीं।
