比較級・最上級
Comparatives & Superlatives
「もっと大きい」「一番大きい」のように比較するとき、英語では比較級（comparatives）と最上級（superlatives）を使います。日本語では「〜より〜のほうが」「一番〜」と言いますが、英語では -er/-est をつけるか more/most を使います。このレッスンでは、比較級、最上級、不規則変化、as...as（同じくらい）、less/least（より少ない）、程度を表す表現をすべて学びましょう。
比較級 — 2つを比べる (-er / more)
2つのものを比べるとき比較級を使います。短い形容詞（1〜2音節）には -er をつけ、長い形容詞（3音節以上）には more をつけます。"than" を比べる相手の前に置きます。スペルの変化に注意しましょう — big → bigger（子音を重ねる）、happy → happier（y → ier）。

My brother is taller than me.
兄は私より背が高いです。
This book is more interesting than that one.
この本はあの本よりおもしろいです。
Dogs are bigger than cats.

"than" を忘れないでください。"He is taller me" は間違いで、"He is taller than me" が正しいです。また "more taller" のように more と -er を同時に使わないでください。
最上級 — 一番〜 (-est / most)
3つ以上の中で「一番〜」と言うとき最上級を使います。短い語には -est、長い語には most をつけます。最上級の前には必ず "the" をつけます。"the tallest"（一番背が高い）、"the most beautiful"（一番きれい）。
A + is + the + 形容詞-est + in/of ... / A + is + the + most + 形容詞 + in/of ...
She is the tallest in our class.
彼女は私たちのクラスで一番背が高いです。
This is the most beautiful flower in the garden.

最上級の前には必ず "the" をつけましょう。"She is tallest" は間違いで、"She is the tallest" が正しいです。"the" を忘れないでください。
不規則変化の比較級・最上級
一部の形容詞は -er/-est のルール通りに変化しません。特別な形を覚える必要があります。これらの不規則な形容詞は最もよく使われるので、しっかり覚えましょう。good → better → best、bad → worse → worst を最初に覚えましょう。
This cake is better than that one.
このケーキはあのケーキよりおいしいです。
Today is worse than yesterday.
今日は昨日よりひどいです。
She can run farther than me.
彼女は私より遠くまで走れます。
He is the best player on the team.

good → better → best と bad → worse → worst をまず覚えましょう。この2つが一番よく使います。"gooder" や "badder" とは書きません — これらは間違いです。
as...as — 同じくらい
2つが「同じくらい」と言うとき "as + 形容詞 + as" を使います。「同じくらいではない」なら "not as...as" を使います。この形では形容詞を変化させません（原形のまま）— -er はつけず、more もつけません。
A + is + as + 形容詞（原形） + as + B / A + is + not as + 形容詞 + as + B
My sister is as tall as me.
姉は私と同じくらいの背の高さです。
English is not as hard as Chinese.

"not as ... as" は "less ... than" と同じ意味です。例："This is not as big as that" = "This is less big than that" = "This is smaller than that"。
less / least — より少ない・一番少ない
"more / most" の反対が "less / least" で、「より少ない／一番少ない」という意味です。"less" は比較、"the least" は最上級で使います。フォーマルな文章でよく使います。

この映画は本ほどおもしろくありません。
This is the least expensive item in the shop.

"less" は長い形容詞（interesting, expensive, difficult）と一緒に使います。短い形容詞（big, tall）には "less" よりも "smaller"、"shorter" のように -er の形を使うほうが自然です。
比較級の強調 — much/a lot/a little
比較級の前に "much"、"a lot"、"a little"、"slightly" をつけて、差の大きさを表現できます。"much bigger" = ずっと大きい。"a little bigger" = 少し大きい。この形で文がより具体的になります。
A + is + much/a lot/a little/slightly + 比較級 + than + B
My father is much taller than me.
父は私よりずっと背が高いです。
This test was a little harder than the last one.
このテストは前のより少しむずかしかったです。
China is a lot bigger than Japan.
中国は日本よりずっと大きいです。

"very" を比較級と一緒に使わないでください。"very taller" は間違いで、"much taller" が正しいです。"very" はふつうの形容詞（very tall, very big）とだけ使います。
日本語と英語のちがい
- ●日本語：「より」+ 形容詞（より大きい、より良い）→ パターンは1つ。英語：-er をつけるか more をつけるか → 形容詞の長さで決まります。形容詞ごとに -er か more かを覚える必要があります。
- ●日本語：「一番〜」→ パターンは1つ。英語：the + -est または the most → やはり形容詞の長さで決まります。
- ●日本語：「〜より〜のほうが大きい」（SOV）→ 「より」を比べる相手の後に置きます。英語："bigger than..."（SVC）→ "than" を形容詞の後に置きます。語順がまったく違うので注意しましょう。
- ●英語には不規則変化（good→better, bad→worse）がありますが、日本語では「よりよい」「より悪い」と規則通りに言えるので楽です。英語の不規則変化は特に注意して覚えましょう。
- ●日本語では「〜と同じくらい」と言いますが、英語では "as...as" のパターンを使います。例：「同じくらいの背の高さ」→ "as tall as"。
- ●日本語でも「ずっと〜より」のように程度を表せます。英語でも "much bigger"、"a little taller" のように程度を表す修飾語をつけられます。
