句動詞（phrasal verb）とは、動詞に前置詞や副詞がくっついて、元の動詞とは違う意味になるものです。get up（起きる）、look for（探す）、turn off（消す）のように、日常会話で非常によく使われます。1語の難しい動詞の代わりに使えるので、ネイティブの英語に近づくカギです。
句動詞とは — 動詞 + 前置詞/副詞 で別の意味
句動詞は「動詞 + 前置詞/副詞」のセットで、元の動詞とは全く違う意味になることがあります。look（見る）+ for = look for（探す）、give（与える）+ up = give up（あきらめる）のように。
I get up at six every day.
私は毎日6時に起きます。
She is looking for her keys.
彼女は鍵を探しています。
Please turn off the light.
電気を消してください。
句動詞は辞書で1つの動詞として載っています。look for を「見る＋〜のために」と分けて考えないこと！
分離型 — 目的語が間に入れる句動詞
turn off, pick up, put on のような句動詞は、目的語を間に入れることができます。ただし、目的語が代名詞（it/them/him 等）の場合は必ず間に入れます。
turn off the light = turn the light off ○ / turn it off ○ / turn off it ×
Please turn off the TV. / Please turn the TV off.
テレビを消してください。（どちらもOK）
Please turn it off.
それを消してください。（代名詞は必ず間に入れる）
She picked up the book. = She picked the book up.
彼女は本を拾った。
Put on your coat. = Put your coat on.
コートを着て。
代名詞は必ず間！turn off it × → turn it off ○。これはテストでよく出ます。
非分離型 — 目的語を間に入れられない句動詞
look for, look after, get on のような句動詞は、目的語を間に入れることができません。常に「句動詞 + 目的語」の語順です。
look after him ○ / look him after ×
She looks after her grandmother.
彼女は祖母の世話をしている。
I'm looking for my phone.
スマホを探している。
He got on the bus.
彼はバスに乗った。
We ran out of sugar.
砂糖を切らした。
look for, look after, get on, run out of は分離不可。「look my phone for」とは言えません。

句動詞の意味は「動詞 + 前置詞」の組み合わせから推測できないものが多いです。1つずつ覚えるのが近道！
日本語との比較
- ●日本語は「起きる」「探す」「消す」と1語で表しますが、英語は get up, look for, turn off と2語以上で表すことが多い
- ●日本語では「テレビ消して」の語順が自由ですが、英語は代名詞を使うとき turn it off の語順が固定
- ●句動詞は日常英語の中心です。ネイティブは rise より get up、search より look for を好みます
- ●日本語の「出かける」「持ち上げる」のような複合動詞に近い概念です
