Subjunctive Mood
Subjunctive mood అంటే కోరిక, సూచన, ఊహ లేదా అవసరతను చెప్పే ప్రత్యేక వ్యాకరణ రూపం. 'If I were...', 'I wish...', 'It is important that he study...' వంటి వాక్యాల్లో వాడతారు. రోజువారీ ఇంగ్లీష్లో ఇది చాలా ఉపయోగకరం!
I wish + past tense
'I wish' తర్వాత past tense వాడి ప్రస్తుతం నిజం కాని కోరికను చెబుతారు. ఇది subjunctive mood.
I wish I had a dog.
నాకు కుక్క ఉంటే బాగుండు.
I wish I could fly.
నేను ఎగరగలిగితే బాగుండు.
She wishes she were taller.
ఆమె ఎత్తుగా ఉంటే బాగుండు అని కోరుకుంటుంది.
I wish it weren't raining.
వర్షం పడకుంటే బాగుండు.
If I were...
'If I were' అంటే 'నేను ... అయితే' అనే ఊహను చెబుతుంది. Subjunctive mood లో 'was' కాకుండా 'were' వాడతారు.
If I were a bird, I would fly.
నేను పక్షి అయితే, ఎగిరేవాడిని.
If I were you, I would study harder.
నేను నీ స్థానంలో ఉంటే, ఇంకా కష్టపడి చదివేవాడిని.
If she were here, she would help us.
ఆమె ఇక్కడ ఉంటే, మనకు సహాయం చేసేది.
If it were sunny, we would go outside.
ఎండగా ఉంటే, మనం బయటికి వెళ్ళేవాళ్ళం.
suggest/recommend + (that) + base form
suggest, recommend, insist వంటి క్రియల తర్వాత 'that + subject + base form (క్రియ మూల రూపం)' వస్తుంది. ఇది formal subjunctive.
I suggest that he study more.
అతను ఇంకా చదవాలని నేను సూచిస్తున్నాను.
She recommended that we leave early.
మనం ముందుగా బయలుదేరాలని ఆమె సిఫార్సు చేసింది.
The teacher insisted that everyone be quiet.
అందరూ నిశ్శబ్దంగా ఉండాలని టీచర్ పట్టుబట్టింది.
They suggested that she try again.
ఆమె మళ్ళీ ప్రయత్నించాలని వాళ్ళు సూచించారు.
తెలుగుతో పోలిక
- ●తెలుగులో 'ఉంటే బాగుండు' (If only / I wish) అనే ఊహాత్మక భావం ఉంది, ఇది subjunctive కు సమానం. 'నేను పక్షి అయితే' = 'If I were a bird'. కానీ ఇంగ్లీష్లో 'were' (was కాదు) వాడటం మరియు base form verb వాడటం ప్రత్యేక నియమాలు.

Subjunctive mood లో 'I/she/he' తర్వాత 'were' వాడాలి, 'was' కాదు.

'suggest that' తర్వాత base form వస్తుంది — 'studies' కాదు, 'study'.
