Indirect Questions
Indirect Questions (अप्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न) अधिक विनम्र और औपचारिक होते हैं। 'Where is the station?' (सीधा) → 'Could you tell me where the station is?' (अप्रत्यक्ष)। Indirect question में शब्द-क्रम कथन जैसा होता है (कर्ता + क्रिया), प्रश्न जैसा नहीं।
विनम्र शुरुआत + कथन शब्द-क्रम
Do you know / Can you tell me / Could you tell me + प्रश्न शब्द + कर्ता + क्रिया
Direct: Where is the temple? → Indirect: Do you know where the temple is?
सीधा: मंदिर कहाँ है? → अप्रत्यक्ष: क्या आप जानते हैं मंदिर कहाँ है?
Direct: What time is it? → Indirect: Could you tell me what time it is?
सीधा: क्या समय है? → अप्रत्यक्ष: क्या आप बता सकते हैं कितने बजे हैं?
Direct: When does the train leave? → Indirect: Do you know when the train leaves?
सीधा: ट्रेन कब छूटती है? → अप्रत्यक्ष: क्या आप जानते हैं ट्रेन कब छूटती है?
Indirect question में कथन शब्द-क्रम: where the station is ✅, where is the station ❌
Yes/No प्रश्नों के लिए if / whether
बिना प्रश्न-शब्द के प्रश्नों में 'if' या 'whether' जोड़ते हैं।
Direct: Is she a teacher? → Indirect: Do you know if she is a teacher?
सीधा: क्या वह शिक्षिका है? → अप्रत्यक्ष: क्या आप जानते हैं वह शिक्षिका है?
Direct: Does he speak Hindi? → Indirect: Can you tell me if he speaks Hindi?
क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि वह हिंदी बोलता है?
I wonder whether it will rain.
मुझे आश्चर्य है कि बारिश होगी या नहीं।
Indirect question में प्रश्नवाचक चिह्न?
यदि बाहरी वाक्य प्रश्न है → ? लगाएँ। यदि कथन है → . (पूर्ण विराम)।
Do you know where he lives? (प्रश्न → ?)
क्या तुम जानते हो वह कहाँ रहता है?
I don't know where he lives. (कथन → .)
मुझे नहीं पता वह कहाँ रहता है।
Could you tell me how much it costs? (?)
क्या आप बता सकते हैं इसकी क़ीमत कितनी है?
I wonder what she wants. (.)
मुझे नहीं पता वह क्या चाहती है।
हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में अंतर
- ●हिंदी में सीधे और अप्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न का शब्द-क्रम लगभग एक ही रहता है: 'मंदिर कहाँ है?' और 'क्या आप जानते हैं मंदिर कहाँ है?'।
- ●अंग्रेज़ी में शब्द-क्रम बदलता है: 'Where is the temple?' → 'where the temple is'।
Common Mistakes
Can you tell me where is the station?
Can you tell me where the station is?
Indirect question में कथन शब्द-क्रम: where the station is (is station नहीं)।
Do you know what does she want?
Do you know what she wants?
Indirect question में 'does' नहीं आता — सीधे कर्ता + क्रिया।
