Relative Adverbs (where, when, why)
Relative Adverbs — where (जहाँ), when (जब), why (जिस कारण) — किसी स्थान, समय या कारण के बारे में अतिरिक्त जानकारी देते हैं। 'This is the place where I was born' (यह वह जगह है जहाँ मैं पैदा हुआ)। ये relative clauses बनाते हैं, who/which की तरह।
where — स्थान
'where' स्थान के बारे में जानकारी देता है।
This is the city where I grew up.
यह वह शहर है जहाँ मैं बड़ा हुआ।
The restaurant where we ate was excellent.
जिस रेस्तरां में हमने खाना खाया, वह बेहतरीन था।
I know a place where you can get great chai.
मुझे एक जगह पता है जहाँ बहुत अच्छी चाय मिलती है।
The school where she studies is famous.
जिस स्कूल में वह पढ़ती है, वह प्रसिद्ध है।
when — समय
'when' समय के बारे में जानकारी देता है।
I remember the day when we first met.
मुझे वह दिन याद है जब हम पहली बार मिले।
Summer is the season when it's very hot.
गर्मी वह मौसम है जब बहुत गर्मी होती है।
There are times when I miss home.
कभी-कभी ऐसा होता है जब मुझे घर की याद आती है।
why — कारण
'why' कारण बताता है। आमतौर पर 'the reason why...' में प्रयोग होता है।
That's the reason why I came late.
यही कारण है जिससे मुझे देर हो गई।
I don't know the reason why she left.
मुझे नहीं पता उसके जाने का कारण क्या था।
Tell me why you are sad.
मुझे बताओ तुम उदास क्यों हो।
'the reason why' में 'why' छोड़ सकते हैं: That's the reason I came late.
हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में अंतर
- ●हिंदी में 'जहाँ' (where), 'जब' (when), 'जिस कारण' (why) अंग्रेज़ी के relative adverbs से सीधे मेल खाते हैं।
- ●दोनों भाषाओं में ये उपवाक्य को मुख्य वाक्य से जोड़ते हैं।
Common Mistakes
This is the city which I was born.
This is the city where I was born.
स्थान के लिए 'where' प्रयोग करें, 'which' नहीं (unless: in which)।
I remember the time where we played.
I remember the time when we played.
समय (time) के लिए 'when' प्रयोग करें, 'where' नहीं।
