Relative Clauses (संबंधवाचक उपवाक्य) वे उपवाक्य हैं जो किसी संज्ञा के बारे में अतिरिक्त जानकारी देते हैं। who (व्यक्ति), which (वस्तु/जानवर), that (दोनों) का प्रयोग होता है। 'The boy who is playing is my brother' — 'who is playing' एक relative clause है जो boy के बारे में बताता है।
who — व्यक्तियों के लिए
'who' का प्रयोग व्यक्तियों के बारे में जानकारी देने के लिए होता है।
The girl who sits next to me is my friend.
जो लड़की मेरे बगल में बैठती है, वह मेरी दोस्त है।
I know a doctor who speaks Hindi.
मैं एक डॉक्टर को जानता हूँ जो हिंदी बोलता है।
The teacher who taught us is retiring.
जिस शिक्षक ने हमें पढ़ाया, वे रिटायर हो रहे हैं।
People who exercise regularly are healthier.
जो लोग नियमित व्यायाम करते हैं, वे स्वस्थ होते हैं।
which — वस्तुओं/जानवरों के लिए
'which' का प्रयोग वस्तुओं और जानवरों के बारे में जानकारी देने के लिए होता है।
The book which I bought is very good.
जो किताब मैंने ख़रीदी, वह बहुत अच्छी है।
The train which goes to Varanasi is late.
जो ट्रेन वाराणसी जाती है, वह देर से है।
I have a dog which loves to play.
मेरे पास एक कुत्ता है जो खेलना पसंद करता है।
The phone which I lost was new.
जो फ़ोन मैंने खोया, वह नया था।
that — सबके लिए (अनौपचारिक)
'that' का प्रयोग व्यक्तियों और वस्तुओं दोनों के लिए हो सकता है, ख़ासकर अनौपचारिक अंग्रेज़ी में।
The man that helped me was very kind.
जिस आदमी ने मेरी मदद की, वह बहुत दयालु था।
The food that she cooks is delicious.
जो खाना वह बनाती है, वह स्वादिष्ट है।

The movie that we watched was boring.
जो फ़िल्म हमने देखी, वह उबाऊ थी।

whose — किसका
'whose' संबंध (possession) दर्शाता है — 'जिसका/जिसकी/जिसके'।
The boy whose father is a teacher is my friend.
जिस लड़के के पिता शिक्षक हैं, वह मेरा दोस्त है।
I met a woman whose daughter won a prize.
मैंने एक महिला से मिला जिसकी बेटी ने इनाम जीता।
हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में अंतर
- ●हिंदी में 'जो...वह' (जो लड़की आई, वह मेरी बहन है) अंग्रेज़ी के relative clause (The girl who came is my sister) से मेल खाता है।
- ●हिंदी में 'जो' सबके लिए, अंग्रेज़ी में who/which/that अलग-अलग।
Common Mistakes
The dog who barks is mine.

जानवर (dog) के लिए 'which' या 'that' प्रयोग होता है, 'who' नहीं।
The boy which helped me is kind.

व्यक्ति (boy) के लिए 'who' प्रयोग होता है, 'which' नहीं।
