関係副詞（where / when / why / how）

関係副詞（where, when, why, how）は、関係代名詞と同様に2つの文をつなげる役割をしますが、場所・時・理由・方法を表す副詞の働きをします。関係代名詞は「前置詞 + which」の代わりに使えることが多く、文をより自然でシンプルにしてくれます。
where — 場所を表す関係副詞
where は先行詞が「場所」のときに使います。「〜する（した）場所」という意味になります。関係代名詞を使うと in which / at which に相当します。
場所を表す名詞 + where + S + V
This is the park where I play soccer.
ここは私がサッカーをする公園だ。
I know the restaurant where they serve great pasta.
おいしいパスタを出すレストランを知っている。
The city where I was born is Osaka.
私が生まれた街は大阪だ。
That is the school where my brother studies.
あれは兄が通っている学校だ。
I want to visit the country where this movie was made.
この映画が作られた国を訪れたい。
where = in which / at which。This is the park where I play soccer. = This is the park in which I play soccer. ただし where の方が自然です。
when — 時を表す関係副詞
when は先行詞が「時」のときに使います。「〜する（した）時」という意味になります。先行詞は the day, the time, the year, the season などです。
時を表す名詞 + when + S + V
I remember the day when we first met.
初めて会った日を覚えている。
Summer is the season when many people go to the beach.
夏は多くの人がビーチに行く季節だ。
Do you remember the time when we went camping?
キャンプに行ったときのことを覚えてる？
2020 was the year when the Olympics were postponed.
2020年はオリンピックが延期された年だ。
when は接続詞の when（〜するとき）とは別物です。関係副詞の when は名詞を修飾し、接続詞の when は副詞節を作ります。
why — 理由を表す関係副詞
why は先行詞が the reason のときに使います。「〜する理由」という意味です。先行詞はほぼ the reason に限られます。
the reason + why + S + V
Tell me the reason why you were late.
遅刻した理由を教えて。
That is the reason why I study English.
それが私が英語を勉強する理由だ。
I don't know the reason why she is angry.
彼女が怒っている理由が分からない。
The reason why he left early is a mystery.
彼が早く帰った理由は謎だ。
the reason why は the reason だけでも通じます。That is the reason I study English. のように why を省略することも多いです。また、That is why ...（だから〜だ）という形もよく使います。
how — 方法を表す関係副詞
how は「〜する方法」を表しますが、先行詞の the way と同時に使うことはできません。the way か how のどちらか一方を使います。
the way + S + V ／ how + S + V（※ the way how は × ）
This is how I make curry.
これが私のカレーの作り方だ。
Tell me the way you solved the problem.
その問題をどうやって解いたか教えて。
I learned how she plays the piano.
彼女のピアノの弾き方を学んだ。
That is how you do it!
そうやるんだよ！
× This is the way how I cook. → ○ This is the way I cook. / This is how I cook. the way と how は一緒に使えません。どちらか一方だけ！
関係代名詞と関係副詞の違い
関係代名詞（who/which/that）の後ろは「不完全な文」（主語や目的語が欠けている）、関係副詞（where/when/why/how）の後ろは「完全な文」（主語も目的語もある）です。
The park which I visited ___. (目的語が欠 → 関係代名詞)
私が訪れた公園。（visited の目的語が欠けている）
The park where I play soccer. (完全な文 → 関係副詞)
私がサッカーをする公園。（I play soccer は完全な文）
The day which I will never forget ___. (目的語が欠 → 関係代名詞)
私が決して忘れない日。（forget の目的語が欠けている）
The day when we first met. (完全な文 → 関係副詞)
私たちが初めて会った日。（we first met は完全な文）

後ろの文が完全か不完全かで判断！ I play soccer（完全）→ where、I visited ___（visited の後に目的語なし = 不完全）→ which/that。
日本語との比較
- ●日本語では「サッカーをする公園」のように関係副詞の概念なく修飾できますが、英語では where / when / why / how という専用の接続語が必要です
- ●日本語は「〜する場所」「〜した日」のように全て同じ形で修飾しますが、英語は場所→where、時→when、理由→why と使い分けます
- ●英語の関係副詞節は名詞の後ろに来ますが、日本語は前に来ます。語順が逆になるので、長い文ほど混乱しやすいです
- ●the way how が使えないのは英語特有のルールで、日本語の感覚では理解しにくいポイントです
