Reported Speech (अप्रत्यक्ष कथन) में किसी और की बात को अपने शब्दों में कहते हैं। Direct: He said, 'I am happy.' → Reported: He said that he was happy. काल, सर्वनाम और समय-शब्द बदलते हैं। हिंदी में 'उसने कहा कि...' का प्रयोग होता है।
काल परिवर्तन (Tense Shift)
Reported Speech में काल एक चरण पीछे जाता है: Present → Past, Past → Past Perfect।
"I am tired." → He said that he was tired.
"मैं थका हूँ।" → उसने कहा कि वह थका था।
"I like chai." → She said that she liked chai.
"मुझे चाय पसंद है।" → उसने कहा कि उसे चाय पसंद थी।
"I went to Delhi." → He said that he had gone to Delhi.
"मैं दिल्ली गया।" → उसने कहा कि वह दिल्ली गया था।
"I will come." → She said that she would come.
"मैं आऊँगी।" → उसने कहा कि वह आएगी।

सर्वनाम और समय-शब्द परिवर्तन
Reported Speech में सर्वनाम और समय/स्थान शब्द भी बदलते हैं।
"I will come today." → He said he would come that day.
"मैं आज आऊँगा।" → उसने कहा कि वह उस दिन आएगा।
"This is my book." → She said that was her book.
"यह मेरी किताब है।" → उसने कहा कि वह उसकी किताब थी।

प्रश्नों का Reported Speech
प्रश्न → asked if/whether (Yes/No) या asked + प्रश्न-शब्द। शब्द-क्रम कथन जैसा।
"Are you happy?" → He asked if I was happy.
"क्या तुम ख़ुश हो?" → उसने पूछा कि क्या मैं ख़ुश था।
"Where do you live?" → She asked where I lived.
"तुम कहाँ रहते हो?" → उसने पूछा कि मैं कहाँ रहता हूँ।
"What time is it?" → He asked what time it was.
"कितने बजे हैं?" → उसने पूछा कि कितने बजे हैं।
आदेश/अनुरोध का Reported Speech
आदेश/अनुरोध → told/asked + कर्म + to + क्रिया।
"Sit down." → The teacher told us to sit down.
"बैठ जाओ।" → शिक्षक ने हमें बैठने को कहा।
"Don't run." → She told him not to run.
"मत दौड़ो।" → उसने उसे न दौड़ने को कहा।
"Please help me." → He asked me to help him.
"कृपया मदद करें।" → उसने मुझसे मदद करने को कहा।
हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी में अंतर
- ●हिंदी में 'उसने कहा कि...' (He said that...) अंग्रेज़ी के Reported Speech से मेल खाता है।
- ●लेकिन हिंदी में काल परिवर्तन (tense shift) उतना अनिवार्य नहीं जितना अंग्रेज़ी में है।
Common Mistakes
He said that he is happy.
He said that he was happy.
Reported Speech में काल एक चरण पीछे: is → was।
She asked where do I live.
She asked where I lived.
Reported question में कथन शब्द-क्रम: where I lived (do I live नहीं)।
