"can" ဆိုတာ "လုပ်နိုင်တယ်" သို့မဟုတ် "ခွင့်ပြုတယ်" ဆိုတဲ့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိပါတယ်။ မြန်မာဘာသာမှာ "နိုင်" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးနဲ့ ဆင်တူပါတယ်။ ဒီသင်ခန်းစာမှာ can ကို စွမ်းရည် (ability)၊ ခွင့်ပြုချက် (permission)၊ တောင်းဆိုခြင်း (request)၊ ငြင်းဆိုခြင်း (can't) နှင့် could ပုံစံတွေ အကုန်လုံး အသေးစိတ် လေ့လာကြပါစို့။ can ဟာ modal verb ဖြစ်ပြီး subject မရွေး ပုံစံမပြောင်းပါဘူး (cans, canning မဟုတ်ပါ)။
can — စွမ်းရည်/တတ်ကျွမ်းမှု
တစ်ခုခုကို တတ်တယ်/နိုင်တယ်လို့ ပြောတဲ့အခါ "can" + ကြိယာရင်း သုံးပါတယ်။ Subject မရွေး "can" ပဲ သုံးပါတယ် (cans, canning မဟုတ်ပါ)။ "can" နောက်မှာ ကြိယာရင်း (base form) သာ သုံးပြီး "to" မထည့်ပါဘူး (can to swim ❌, can swim ✓)။ ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာ စွမ်းရည်၊ ဉာဏ်စွမ်းရည်၊ ဘာသာစကား စွမ်းရည် စသည်တို့ အားလုံးကို can နဲ့ ပြောနိုင်ပါတယ်။

"be able to" ဟာ "can" နဲ့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်တူပါတယ် (နိုင်တယ်)။ ဒါပေမယ့် "can" ကို ပစ္စုပ္ပန်နှင့် အတိတ် (could) မှာသာ သုံးနိုင်ပြီး "be able to" ကို ကာလအားလုံးမှာ သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်။ အနာဂတ် (will be able to) နှင့် present perfect (have been able to) တွေမှာ "be able to" ကိုသာ သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်။
